Yaya Can Cook: Kalabasa Maja

My title sounds a little different than my other Happy Foodie posts. Ate Weng’s not known for her cooking skills but she has a specialty: Kalabasa Maja. It’s a healthier version of Maja Blanca (coconut pudding), my personal favorite. It’s really yummy and, surprisingly, easy to make.

Ate Weng is generous enough to share the recipe with everyone.

Ingredients:
1/2 kilo squash
4 cups coconut milk (gata)
3 tablespoons cornstach dissolved in 1 1/2 cups of water
1 can cooked corn kernels
1 cup sugar

1. Boil the squash until soft.
2. Once soft, mash the squash.

3. Put the coconut milk and sugar in a pan over medium heat. Let it boil.

4. Once the coconut milk is boiling, pour the mashed squash and corn kernels. Mix well.
5. Pour in the dissolved cornstarch.

6. Keep stirring until thick. It will take about 15-20 minutes.

7. Pour in a pan or container and let it cool. Place it in the fridge once cooled.

8. Serve and enjoy! You can also put toasted coconuts on it.

  1. Mukhang masarap at healthy nga! Yung nanay ko naman ginagataan ang kalabasa parang halaya style naman pero imbes na ube e kalabasa ang ginagamit nya. I’m sure magugustuhan nya rin yan. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

    1. Hi Isa! Thank you for the invitation and I am sorry for the late response. I had been really busy this week. I may not be able to accommodate a weekday shoot though because I am also a working mom. You may share the recipe to your show instead. 🙂
